Is There Really a Difference in Taste Between English and Australian Cadbury’s Chocolate?

Cadbury Dairy Milk is an extremely popular brand of chocolate bar that is manufactured by the Cadbury plc arm of Kraft Foods (the exception being in the United States where the product is marketed by The Hershey Company) and sold in several countries around the world. It first went on sale in the United Kingdom in 1905 when Cadbury’s launched its first Dairy Milk bar, the unique selling point of which wsa that it was made with a higher proportion of milk than previous chocolate bars. By 1913 had quickly established itself as the company’s best selling product by 1913.

Whenever you get a group of Australian and British ex-pats or travellers together for any length of time pretty soon the conversation will turn to what is better; the taste of Australian Cadbury’s Dairy Milk Chocolate or English Cadbury’s Dairy Milk Chocolate.

A debate that has raged for many years, the British have always complained that Australian Cadbury chocolate is nowhere near as good as what they are accustomed too back home whilst the Australians fiercely maintain their bars are much superior. The difference between the two, whilst widely acknowledged, has never really been definitively explained.

One school of thought for why was that an anti-melting agent was included within the Australian version and it is this that is responsible for the anomaly in taste. Whilst another attributed the difference to the ratio between the amount of milk and cocoa powder used, with the British version containing more milk and less cocoa and therefore being much creamier than its Australian counterpart. The degree to which this is true I could not tell you. But there is one major difference that I am aware of. Vegetable Fat.

Fairly recently Cadbury in Australia made some major changes to their products. They changed their package sizes, their packaging and also one of their main ingredients, replacing cocoa butter with vegetable fat. As if by magic the new Australian version of Cadbury’s Chocolate suddenly started to taste exactly the same as the British version, thus rendering the debate largely redundant. Not least because the average Australian consumer, if this report is to be believed, instantly began to dislike it!
